In my research I am looking at magazine adverts, digi packs and conventions of a music video. My planning consists of everything I have done or am doing to complete my final product.




Audience Reseach












Prefrence to servey
I did a survey to find out what kind of interested the students and teachers of my sixth form have that would fit the genre of the music I am using in my video. I asked 10 students and 5 teachers.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
- Go to gigs/festivals
- Go shopping
- Hang out with your friends

I found only 10% went shopping, 40% hung out with friends and 50% went to gigs and festivals. This shows that they spend less time concentrating on their fashion and more time spending time listening to the music from live bands and spending time been with friends. This has inspired me to make my music video have a live band feel to it and use footage of a live band playing to make it appeal more to my target audience.

How do you get your music?
- Buy c.ds
- Download off the internet illegally
- Buying from iTunes or other download sites

I found all the students I asked downloaded off the internet illegally and 10% of teachers bought C.ds and the rest bought their music off iTunes.

Do you have a smart phone?
75% of students did have a smart phone where as 25% of media and English teachers did not own a smart phone therefore shows that they are into their technology linking with the downloading way they get their music. Therefore I am going to make sure my video is able to be downloaded so my target audience can access it in an easier way and a way they would chose to with all their other types of music.



I asked my survey group to give chose one word out of the words I gave to describe the track I am using. These were:
-Exciting
-Calm
-Cheerful
-melancholic
-peaceful
-dangerous

25% said the track was exciting, 50% said it was dangerous and the other 25% said the track was melancholic. Therefore I’m going to use these ideas of emotions to help me with my music video and link these words in when I direct the actors of my video on how to look and act.


The audience my music video is targeted at

I have made a mood board to show the variety of things that link into the genre of music the band plays for who I have done my music video with, the kind of life style they like to live by show what music they have been inspired by or can relate to, clothes they would wear, food they like ect.. This is to give the audience an idea of seeing if there interest link to this therefor the music genre will problems similar and they might therefore be intrigued to watch the video.




The type of audience I am trying to target with my product is:

Age group - the type of people I use in my video and the story line would be targeted at 14 – 20 year olds, I think that anyone over this age would not be as attracted to my music video as narrative music video’s appeal more to teenagers.

They would watch things such as MTV and T4 where there are lots of programs about teenagers which they can relate to such as hollyoaks; they would also watch music channels as they like to see the videos of the younger generation of music.

They would live in urban areas as the music style and video appeals to teenagers who go to gigs and have an active social life of going out drinking and been in young relationships, whereas people who live in the countryside may listen to a different style of music and not go out as much or be as involved in urban lifestyles.

They would also do media staking because they would be involved in lots of social networking sites as that is how this type of music is spread about.

They would be students as the people used in my video are students and therefore they could relate to them.  



Plans for digi pack


To plan how I wanted my digi pack to look I drew up sketches of how I would like it to end up like when I did it on photo shop, I wasn't going to stick to the exact drawings of what I have done here but it gave me a good idea of how I wanted them to look, and link between each other and the music video by using similar or linking images, colour schemes or writing on both the cd packaging and the music magazine advert.












Insperational music video













‘One night only – say you don’t wanna’ really inspired me for my music video. This is my favourite song and music video. I love the video because the story works perfectly and the twist at the end is very clever, as the music video seems like its narrative is liner it still confuses you as it can come across as been conceptual. This has helped me when planning to shoot my music video as I now want to go for this kind of style. In my music video I want to show a boy and a girl showing some kind of romance but not a normal kind of romance which will get the consumer of my video locked with a kind or ‘will they, wont they’ get together kind of feel at the end. This is exactly the feel this video gives and this is why It inspired me so much and why my video will be similar to this.















I have chosen the castells – romance as an inspiration for my music video as it uses the feel of home video footage of the band showing the four boys in the band just been normal. I enjoyed the home video style because it made it feel familiar as if I was watching friends. I also like how they have performance in the video and this has inspired me to use this in my video of the actual band whose song it is.    However they video is conceptual and my video will be a narrative with performance in it.

I was inspired by this video because of the strong narrative it has throughout the video as well as little parts of performance. The story line of the song is acted out very well in the video and gives you a strong understanding of what the song is about. However the lead singer plays the leading role in the video which is not what I am wanting to do in my music video  






Conventions of a music video

I learnt about Goodwins theory of music videos and applied this into talking and anaylising a artist i like and his music video. I chose Olly Murs - Busy, wrote up everything i wanted to say about the music video and then recorded my self talking throught it with the video playing behind me. Here it is

























Script of music video
As soon as song starts, and only music is playing. GIRL WAKES UP, WITH A BOY IN A SCRUFFY BED, ALL MESSY, BOTH IN CLOTHSE FROM NIGHT BEFORE. STILL BEFORE LYRICS START, GIRL GETS UP LOOKS IN THE MIRROR THEN STICKS A NOTE TO THE MIRROR, SHE THEN LOOKS AT THE BOY THROUGH THE MIRROR AND A SHOT WILL BLUR OUT THE GIRL AND ZOOM IN ON THE BOY WHO IS STILL SLEEPING AND WALKS. SHE THEN RUNS DOWN THE STAIRS AND OUT THE FRONT DOOR.
Then the lyrics start...
‘You look around; look at you’ – GIRL IS WALKING OUT OF GATE OUTSIDE, LOOKS ALONG THE STREET EITHER WAY, SPARKS UP A CIGERETTE.

‘You fall down to pass out it’s in your head there’s no doubt’ – BOY IS SITTING ON THE END OF THE BED; HEAD IS HIS HANDS AND WIPES HIS FACE.
‘Put out a hand to reach out we understand you scream out’ – STANDS UP LOOKS AT THE NOTE, THEN YOU GET A SHOT OF THE EMOTION IN HIS FACE. HIS FACE THEN CHANGES AND HE RUNS OUT OF THE BED ROOM, DOWN THE STAIRS TO THE BATHROOM THEN DOOR THEN SLAMS SHOT AS THE CAMERA STAYS FOCUSED ON THE DOOR TILL HE COMES OUT (MAKING THE VIEWER ASSUME HE IS BEING SICK) HE WALKS OUT OF THE DOOR AND HITS HIS HEAD BACK ON THE WALL….

Music and repeating of words and the song is coming to an end – THIS SHOWS THE COUPLE WALKING IN THE NIGHT, HOLDING HANDS AND SHOTS FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES SHOW THEM SMILING AND LOOKING HAPPY, THE CAMERA CONTINOUS TO FOLLOW THEM AS THEY GET TO A DEAD END….. THEY BOTH STEP UP TO IT AND JUST AS THE SONG COMES TO FINISH THEY JUMP. LEAVING THE VIEWERS ON EDGE.

I am an A level Student and I am writing to request your permission to use one track by Motion tourist entitled ‘This is an end’.
With you permission, this track would be used in my current A level media studies project that involves creating a music video for a popular music track, as well as producing an album and a music magazine advert for the artist.

Running with camera
Following over and hurting myself or breaking the camera.
Be careful when running and don’t run in places that are likely for me to fall over.
Recording out the window of the car whilst the car drives along the road.
Be careful not to drop the camera out of the car and make sure the driver doesn’t get distracted by me and concentrates on the road.
Don’t hold the camera too far out the car and be discreet whilst recording.
Recording the band live in a pub
Drunk people trying to get the camera or spilling drinks
Stay out of the way of everyone when recording
Recording at night time in the dark
Falling over and hurting myself or the camera or the actors falling over
Be careful and try stay in places that are lighted up best
